As much as 2.3 million metric tons of monolithic refractory is used annually.

Refractory contractors are now installing monolithic refractories in cement kilns rather than brick refractories.

Learn how refractory contractors install monolithic refractory below.

Cast-In-Place Installation

The cast-in-place method is one of the most popular processes for large areas.

Refractory engineers mix precise amounts of water with the refractory materials until a homogenous mixture is achieved.

Once the batch quality is optimized, the refractory installer will load it into the high-pressure concrete pump which is vibrated in place.

The cast-in-place install method provides excellent quality control and a smooth finish which minimizes abrasion.

Wet Shotcrete Installation

Although a common method, refractory installers prefer wet shotcrete for its speedier installation to maximize productivity.

Refractory workers use the same mixing and pumping equipment as the cast-in-place but with materials designed for spraying.

Then, the wet shotcrete mixture needs an accelerator when it is discharged through the nozzle to allow immediate setting upon impact.

This monolithic refractory method requires less labor but needs more skill during application.

Dry Shotcrete

Also known as gunite, dry shotcrete is the traditional way to place shotcrete refractory.

Typically, it mainly uses a rotary gunite machine which proves versatile, low-cost, and easy to transport along with easy maintenance.

Refractory applications use the dry shotcrete method where it needs smaller and more specialized installations.

A refractory contractor will need skill to apply the material properly similar to wet shotcrete installation.
